Our list of foods beginning with h will open your eyes to the large amounts of foods that contain this as a starting letter. From honey melon to haddock, we cover the many foods that you can imagine contain the letter H.

1. Haddock

A haddock is a saltwater fish that is found in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has an elongated, tapering shape and a very small mouth. It has a triangular first dorsal thin which makes it easily identifiable. It is a very popular fish that can be served in many ways and is usually accompanied by a tartare sauce.

2. Haggis

Haggis is a Scottish savory pudding that is made from sheep’s pluck (its liver, lungs, heart and stomach), onions, oatmeal, suet (hard fat) and a variety of spices. Traditionally the contents were all cooked while being encased in the animals’ stomach, but now can be cooked in artificial casings.

3. Ham

Ham is a cured meat made from a leg cut of pork. Ham can be either wet cured (using acid) or dry-cured (using salt). Ham also comes as smoked or un-smoked that has an entirely different flavor. Hams are often flavored with spices and marinades that impart even more flavors. It is made across the world but every region has its version.

4. Hare

Hares closely resemble rabbits and are classified as game meat. They are very low in fat making them a very healthy alternative to fatty meats. They are used in many different countries and cuisines like Hasenpfeffer.

5. Hakka noodles

Hakka noodles are a type of noodles made by the Hakka people in China. It has a pale yellow color and is served in a soup with different types of meats such as chicken or pork. It can also be used in stir-fries or stews.

6. Hazelnut

This nut is one of the most popular in the world. It is a medium-sized nut (between 1/2 – 1 inch) and has a thin, brown skin that is sometimes removed before using in recipes. Hazelnuts are also very popular in the confectionary world and are used a lot during the production of chocolate and nut butters.

7. Hake

This fish is found in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean and can grow up to 3 feet 3 inches (1 meter) long. Hake has tiny sharp feet and thin spiky dorsal fins. These fish are very popular in the culinary world and can be used in virtually any way.

8. Heart cherry

A heart cherry is exactly what it sounds like, a cherry shaped like a heart. It is the size of a normal cherry and has a bright red color. This fruit can be used fresh, preserved or cooked in many dishes over many cuisines.

9. Herb

Herbs are edible leaves from any plant that are used as flavorings or garnishes. Herbs are very aromatic and flavorful and can change a whole dish. They can vary in color but are mostly different shades of green. They can either be robust herbs which include rosemary or thyme, or soft which include coriander and parsley.

10. Hollandaise

One of the oldest and most famous sauces, hollandaise is one of the five mother sauces of French cuisine. It is an emulsion of egg yolk, melted butter and lemon juice. Being a mother sauce, it naturally is the base for many other sauces such as a Béarnaise and Au Vin Blanc. The most famous use for a Hollandaise sauce is on a classic Eggs Benedict.

11. Hummus

This Arabic condiment is made by blending chickpeas with oil, tahini and various other spices. It is used as a dip or spread for crudités, crackers or any other snack. Today, many other ingredients are used to make hummus such as beetroot.

12. Honey

Honey is a thick and extremely sweet liquid that is naturally produced by bees. Honey is stored in honeycombs by the bees and harvested from these. It has multiple uses in the culinary world and is widely recognized for its health benefits. Honey does come in different flavors that are determined by their environment.

13. Honeydew melon

Honeydew melons, or green melons, are large round melons ranging between 6-9 inches (15-22cm) in diameter and weighs about 4-8 pounds (1.8-3.6kg). The smooth peel is a yellow-green color while the flesh is usually a pale green. They are typically grown in more tropical climates and have a very sweet, juicy flavor.

14. Horseradish

This root vegetable is produced and used worldwide. It has a very pungent and unique spicy flavor that can be used as a spice or condiment. It can also be used as a base for many recipes including pickled horseradish or horseradish sauce.

15. Harissa

Harissa is a hot chili paste that originated in Tunisia. It is made from roasted red pepper, Buklouti or serrano peppers, olive oil and a ton of different spices including coriander and cumin. Different regions have different recipes and ingredients. Harissa is mainly used as a flavoring ingredient for sauces or stews.

16. Habanero pepper

These are some of the hottest peppers on the market and reach between 100 000 and 350 000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units). Unripe, they have a green color and as they mature turn red and yellow, sometimes varieties purple and white. These are not only hot but extremely flavorful peppers that are mostly used to make hot sauces as condiments.

17. Hoison sauce

This Asian sauce is made from soybeans, chili, fennel and garlic. Other ingredients that are regularly used are Chinese Five Spice, vinegar and some form of sugar. The sauce has a thick consistency and has a very distinctive salty and sweet flavor. Hoison sauce makes an amazing marinade for red meats but can also be used in stews, roasts and sauces.

18. Halva

Halva is a sweet confection that can be found in many areas of the world, mostly the Middle East and Asia. Two main types can be found; flour-based and nut-based. Flour based is more gelatinous and smooth whereas nut base is more crumbly. Halva can be served as a snack or as part of a meal.

19. Havarti cheese

This Danish semi-soft cheese is made from cows’ milk and can be easily sliced. It has a pale yellow color and a few holes inside. It is aged for 3 months and never any longer or shorter.

20. Headcheese

Headcheese is a terrine made from the flesh of the head of calves or pigs. The meat is enclosed by a jelly and never contains any dairy. Sheep and cows’ meat can also be used but is much less common.

21. Hash browns

These are crispy deep-fried mashed potatoes. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and also contain different ingredients depending on where they come from. They are intended to be a breakfast food item but can be served as a side dish. You can even find it in certain dishes such as the hashbrown casserole.
